About Phoenix

Phoenix was founded in the year 1861, more than 50 years before Arizona officially became a US state.

In the year 1881, Phoenix became incorporated as a city, and in 1889 was appointed capital of the Arizona Territory.

Arizona later became a state in the year 1912, and it was then that Phoenix became the state capital.

Today Phoenix is the sixth-largest city in the United States, with an estimated population of over 4 million in its metropolitan area.
